Pet Microchipping | Clarksburg Animal Hospital

Identification

Microchipping

Sometimes pets wander away from home and can’t find their way back. A microchip can’t get lost like a collar or tags. It stays with your pet for their entire life.

Why it matters

It changes how fast lost pets get home.

With a microchip

An hour or less

How quickly we see microchipped pets find their way home.

Without a microchip

A couple of days

How long pets without a microchip can take to be connected back with their owners.

How it works

Quick, and relatively painless.

  1. The chip

We use a needle to place a microchip about the size of a grain of rice just under the skin at the shoulders. For pets over 6 months we use a local anesthetic to make it even more comfortable, and most of our patients are microchipped during their spay or neuter, so they don’t feel anything.

  2. The scan

Nearly all veterinarians, emergency clinics, specialists and shelters have microchip scanners and will scan an animal brought to them. The HomeAgain chip can be read by any of more than 20,000 participating veterinarians and animal shelters.

  3. The call

The chip ID is searched in HomeAgain’s National Pet Recovery Database. Once your details are found, you’re contacted so you can be reunited with your pet.

HomeAgain

Your pet is registered for life with the initial registration fee. An annual HomeAgain membership adds a few perks.

Only paid the lifetime fee? Don’t worry. You can call at any time to pay the annual fee and get the help you need.

  • A free call to Animal Poison Control

If you’re not up to date, you can call HomeAgain to renew first.

  • Alerts within 25 miles

If your pet goes missing, HomeAgain proactively alerts veterinary hospitals, animal shelters and volunteer “Pet Rescuers” within a 25-mile radius of where they were lost.

  • A ride home from 500+ miles away

If your pet is found more than 500 miles from home, HomeAgain will pay to transport them home.

Your details

Keep your details up to date.

If you move or change your phone number, remember to update your information. We’ve come across several pets who were microchipped, but whose owner details weren’t current, and it takes longer to track down their families.
