Labwork is part of every wellness plan.
Which tests your pet needs depends on species, age and lifestyle. Every pet should have a yearly fecal check for parasites, even indoor cats, and pets over 6 should have regular bloodwork.
Do you run lab tests in the hospital, or send them out?
Both. Some tests run right here, including full urinalysis, blood glucose, PCV/TS and vaginal smears. We use reference laboratories for all of our other lab work, such as full blood chemistry, a CBC with complete differential, fecal flotation by centrifugation and other specialized testing. Canine thyroid testing is done at Michigan State Vet School.
Can you test for heartworm and tick-borne disease?
Yes. We run the 4Dx Test for heartworm and tick-borne disease in the hospital, and our in-house Feline Triple Test checks cats for FeLV, FIV and heartworm. We can also send a Lyme Quantitative C6 test to a reference laboratory.
Can you check a lump or growth on my pet?
We can do cytology of growths in the hospital using a fine needle aspirate, and we send biopsies and cytologies to a reference laboratory. Removal and biopsy of growths and tumors is also one of the surgeries we perform.
Can you test samples from my pet’s ears or skin?
Yes. We run ear and skin cytology in the hospital. We can also send cultures to a reference laboratory to identify bacteria and their antibiotic sensitivity.
Does my indoor cat really need a fecal test?
Yes. Every pet should have a yearly fecal check for parasites, even indoor cats.
Does my pet need regular bloodwork?
Pets over 6 years old should have regular bloodwork. Beyond that, which tests your pet needs depends on species, age and lifestyle. See annual labwork and testing for more.
